Small original paintings you can see in Markham

+1 (416) 919-8331

Eight of the available works in our catalogue have no side longer than 16 inches. Sergei Troshin painted all of them by hand, and each exists once.

They come in two families: four acrylic canvases of 11 × 14 in from 2019, and three wooden boards of 12 × 16 in from 2020 sealed under resin, plus one narrow canvas on its own. Prices are on request, so ask by phone.

Which small originals are available?

All eight below were marked available on their own pages when this page went up. Open any of them for more photographs and details, or see every available work in the catalogue, large and small.

The 2019 canvases, 11 × 14 in (27.9 × 35.6 cm)

Acrylic on canvas, with the paint left open to the air.

Spring Thoughts, whole canvas: a light ground covered in fine coloured drips

Spring Thoughts

A pale sage-green ground with small red and brown marks scattered across it. Most of the canvas stays light.

Autumn Hysteria, whole canvas: brown, yellow and pale blue lines over rust

Autumn Hysteria

Rust and terracotta under a tight tangle of dark brown. Pale blue is the only cool colour on it.

Christmas, whole canvas: dense red and green lines with white loops

Christmas

Red and light green lines lead, over olive, peach and cream, with white loops on top.

Blue, White, whole canvas: cool blue and turquoise lines with white loops

Blue, White

Light blue, turquoise and cobalt from edge to edge, with a few threads of red and ochre underneath.

The 2020 boards, 12 × 16 in (30.5 × 40.6 cm)

Acrylic on wooden board with a raised painted edge, sealed with resin.

Fair of Colours: a board with a raised edge, covered in red, green, white and brown lines

Fair of Colours

Red, green, white and brown laid line over line. The artist writes that there are “sometimes up to ten floating layers” of epoxy in it.

Transience: a board with a raised edge, covered in red, blue, yellow and white lines

Transience

A warmer mix, with yellow flicks among red, blue and white. The trailed line carries on over the raised edge.

Zwei Goldfische: a board with a raised edge, covered in pale blue, green and white lines

Zwei Goldfische

The palest of the three, mostly white, pale blue and green. Its page records that both sides of the board are painted.

Improvisation: white, cobalt, red and mint lines in an even web over a violet-pink ground

Improvisation, 16 × 10 in (40.6 × 25.4 cm)

The narrow one, from 2019. It is acrylic on canvas like the four above, but sealed with resin like the boards, so it sits between the two families. White, cobalt, red and mint lines cover a violet-pink ground with no single focal point.

Can the four 11 × 14 in canvases hang as one group?

Yes, and the gallery's own page for Autumn Hysteria suggests it: the four share one format, so they line up edge to edge. Here are the numbers before you pick a wall. You can also take two or three of them; our note on hanging two or three works together covers the smaller groups.

Two by two

About 24 × 30 in with 2 in gaps61 × 76 cm, close to one 24 × 30 painting

In one row

About 50 in wide with 2 in gaps, or 62 in if the long sides run across127 cm or 157 cm

  1. Measure the free width of the wall, or the furniture the group will sit above.
  2. Cut four sheets of paper to 11 × 14 in and tape them up with the gaps you want. Paper costs nothing to move.
  3. Live with the paper for a day, then bring the measurements when you come to see the canvases.

Canvas or resin board: what changes at this size?

Both families are built from trailed and dripped line. The difference is the face, and on a small work you stand close enough to notice it.

The 11 × 14 in canvases

Open acrylic on canvas. The paint takes the light rather than throwing it back, so a lamp or a window does not land on the picture as a bright patch.

Canvas, wood or board explains what each support asks of a wall.

The 12 × 16 in boards

Wooden board with a raised edge that is painted too, under a hard, glossy resin coat. Colour sits deep, and the face reflects whatever is opposite it. Zwei Goldfische is painted on the back as well.

What a resin finish does in a room tells you which walls suit a glossy face.

Where does a small original belong?

Where people pass close by or sit close by. At 11 × 14 in the detail is the picture, and you only see it within a few steps. What a small painting asks for goes into viewing distance and light in depth.

On the far wall of an open room, or high over a fireplace, a small work reads as a patch of colour. For a wall like that, see our large paintings for an office or lobby, or hang the four canvases as one group.

  • Above a desk or a bedside table
  • A narrow stretch of wall between two doors
  • The turn of a staircase or a short hallway
  • Beside a reading chair
  • Standing on a shelf or a mantel, leaned against the wall

Seeing them, and taking one home

Viewings are by appointment at 473 Simonston Blvd, Markham, any day between 9:00 and 18:00. All eight small works can be seen on one visit, so you can hold the canvases side by side and compare a board's face with a canvas in the same light.

A painting this size travels on the seat of a car. Read moving a painting by car before you set off, and bring a blanket.
