Beneath the multiple layers of wallpaper, the intricate, abstract pattern of the wall emerges. The shimmering diamond dust on its surface captivates anyone who takes the time to notice it. Developing this idea, I'm thinking of people as multilayered beings, much like the walls in my series. From the outside, individuals may appear consistent, with their behavior and presentation creating a certain image. But beneath that exterior, there are layers of experiences, emotions, beliefs, and hidden parts of themselves that can be vastly different or surprising. Consider how people are shaped by both external influences (like the "wallpaper" of societal norms or life experiences) and internal elements (their true nature, fears, hopes, or dreams). This unpredictability comes from the interplay between these external presentations and the often-hidden internal realities.Available — this original is currently for sale.

About this piece
Treasure Behind the Wall II (2024) is an original, one-of-a-kind work by Sergei Troshin, born 1960, based in Canada. It is made with acrylic painting, collage, diamond dust on wood. It was completed in 2024. There is only one — nothing here is a print or a reproduction.
Materials and finish
The work is built on wooden board. A wooden board is rigid, which is what lets a thick, poured surface stay flat over time.
Diamond dust — Diamond dust is a fine glitter of ground glass or crystal scattered into a wet layer. It reads as plain texture in daylight and only sparks when a light source hits it at an angle.
Collage — Collage sets real materials into the painted surface, so parts of the work have their own physical edge and thickness. Tate’s glossary entry on collage explains the term in more detail.
Acrylic — Acrylic dries quickly and stays flexible, which lets layers be laid over one another in a single session and scraped back while still workable. Tate’s glossary entry on acrylic paint explains the term in more detail.
Looking after it
Applied elements sit proud of the surface, so handle the work by its edges and lay it face-up if it is ever off the wall.
Room conditions matter more than anything else: stable temperature, stable humidity, no direct sun. The American Institute for Conservation publishes plain-language guidance on caring for artwork at home.
