Born: 1960
Mixed media on panel

Description:

„Before the thunder,
beyond the flame —

came the Voice:
not heard,
but received.

Not command,
but Presence.

A whisper
carved not in stone,
but in soul."

"You cannot see My face… but I will make My goodness pass before you."
(Exodus 33:20–22)

I chose difficult materials:
Wood, which remembers, and rust, which testifies to time.
I'm not telling a straightforward story —
I'm creating a surface where revelation might have occurred.

"Whisper" is not just a whisper to the ear.
It is a trace of His presence.
I'm not depicting Sinai —
I'm showing what remains after:
when the mountain is empty,
when the sound has left,
but the place still breathes with Him.

About this piece

Whisper (2025) is an original, one-of-a-kind work by Sergei Troshin, born 1960, based in Canada. It is made with mixed media on panel and measures 32.7 × 42.9 in (83 × 109 cm). It was completed in 2025. There is only one — nothing here is a print or a reproduction.

Materials and finish

The work is built on panel. A solid panel keeps a poured or built-up surface perfectly flat.

Mixed media — Mixed media simply means more than one material was used in the same work, chosen for what each one does to the surface. Tate’s glossary entry on mixed media explains the term in more detail.

Size and scale

The piece measures 32.7 × 42.9 in (83 × 109 cm). It reads as an upright piece, and this is a large piece — it will carry a sofa wall or a dining wall by itself, and wants roughly its own width of clear space around it.

Looking after it

Hang it out of direct sunlight, keep it away from radiators and humidity, and dust it with a dry, soft cloth.

Room conditions matter more than anything else: stable temperature, stable humidity, no direct sun. The American Institute for Conservation publishes plain-language guidance on caring for artwork at home.

From the same year

2025 is represented in the catalogue by 3 works. Alongside this one: Hamsin (2025) and Traces of the Forgotten (2025).
