Fall Waltz: a square of pink, red, turquoise and yellow textured paint set in a wide brown stained wood surround
Fall Waltz, 2019, 36 × 36 in. Available.

What kind of gallery is this?

It is the studio gallery of a single painter. Every work on the walls is an original by Sergei Troshin, a self-taught artist based in Thornhill, and the catalogue holds 61 of them.

That makes it a different trip from a museum afternoon or a group show. You choose titles at home from the artworks page, and those are the pieces you stand in front of. You can read how he came to painting on the artist's page.

  • Paintings on canvas, board and wood. Each exists once; there are no editions.
  • Acrylic, natural dyes, poured resin, wax paste and collage, often several of them in one work.
  • Painted furniture and home accents, which have a collection of their own.
  • A Certificate of Authenticity, signed by the artist, with each piece.
  • Prices on request. There is no online checkout, so you ask by phone or through the form on any artwork page.

Which paintings can you see on a visit?

Any work in the catalogue that is still available. The four below are available today, and the gold bar under each one shows its longest side against the largest of the four, so you can compare them before you come.

Summer Languor: white, ochre, green and dark red lines of paint crossing each other over the whole canvas

Summer Languor, 2020

Fall Waltz: a textured multicoloured square mounted on a brown wood panel with a round fixing in each corner

Fall Waltz, 2019

Acrylic and resin on fibreboard, mounted on a stained and glazed wood panel, 36 × 36 in. The wood surround does the work of a frame.

Longest side 36 in
Dream Ocean: a cloud of fine turquoise, yellow and white threads on dark navy, inside a cream crackled border

Dream Ocean, 2022

Acrylic on fibreboard, sealed with resin, 32 × 34 in. The crackled cream border is part of the painting and works as a built-in frame.

Longest side 34 in
Truth: a dense mesh of red, orange, turquoise and white lines with white stencilled capital letters partly covered by the paint

Truth, 2020

Acrylic on hardboard under resin, 24 × 20 in. White stencilled capitals sit half buried under the poured lines, and you read them from close up.

To see only what can still be bought, open the available works. If raised paint is new to you, our page on textured canvas art explains what it does on a wall.

How do you get here from Richmond Hill?

You drive south. Richmond Hill ends at Highway 7 and Highway 407, and Thornhill starts on the other side of them. The gallery is on the Markham half of Thornhill, east of Yonge Street.

  1. Richmond Hill

The city lies between Markham and Vaughan. Highway 404 is its eastern edge.

  2. Highway 7 and the 407

Together they mark Richmond Hill's southern border. Cross them and you have left the city.

  3. Thornhill

It runs from Highway 7 down to Steeles Avenue, where Toronto begins. Yonge Street divides it: Vaughan to the west, Markham to the east.

  4. 473 Simonston Blvd

The gallery. Its postal code starts with L3T, one of Thornhill's two prefixes. Ring before you set out.

The boundaries above are taken from the Wikipedia entries on Richmond Hill and Thornhill. For the time from your own door, open the route in Google Maps and replace the starting point with your street.

How do you arrange a viewing?

By phone or email. You name the works and a day, and the time is agreed with you directly.

  1. Pick two to five titles from the catalogue. Works marked Sold or Private Collection have gone, but naming one still tells us what you like.
  2. Call +1 (416) 919-8331 or write to sanssouciartgallery@gmail.com with the titles and a day.
  3. Measure the wall you have in mind and photograph it in daylight.
  4. Come at the agreed hour and take your time in front of each piece.

How a viewing works has the detail on what to bring and how a painting gets home. What earlier visitors wrote is on the reviews page.
